Vallejo, California – The Filipino American community in Vallejo celebrated the 126th Philippine Independence Day with the annual “Pista sa Nayon” event. Organized by the Philippine Cultural Committee, the festivities took place at Mare Island Coal Sheds for the third consecutive year, showcasing cultural performances, fashion displays, martial arts demonstrations, food stalls, and handicraft exhibits.
Consul General Neil Ferrer commended the organizers for their efforts, recognizing the community’s cultural contributions. The event also received recognition from Solano County and Vallejo City, which declared June 2024 as “Philippine Cultural Month.”
“I am proud of the Filipino Community in Solano County and Vallejo,” stated Ferrer, highlighting the strong ties between the Philippines and the United States, with a significant Filipino population in Solano County, particularly in Vallejo.
Distinguished guests, including Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell and other government officials, attended the celebration. Vallejo’s historical ties with Filipinos, dating back to the early 1900s at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, were also highlighted, noting notable personalities like H.E.R., a Grammy-winning artist from Vallejo.
Local Fil-Am leaders, including council members and a Superior Court Judge, showcased the community’s active participation in civic affairs, reflecting the unity and pride of Vallejo’s Filipino American population.
