Lawndale, California — A Lawndale hit-and-run crash near Leuzinger High School left a 15-year-old boy dead and another teenager injured after they were struck while riding an electric scooter and an e-bike. Authorities are searching for the driver as the victims’ families and the surrounding community confront a devastating loss.

Teenagers Struck Near Leuzinger High School

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after 10:15 p.m. on Monday, July 20, to the 4200 block of Rosecrans Avenue near Leuzinger High School. Authorities said a vehicle struck two teenagers traveling on separate electric devices. Deputies found both teens in the roadway.

Mathew Estrella, 15, reportedly riding an electric scooter, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second teenager received treatment for minor injuries. The driver fled before authorities arrived, prompting investigators to seek public assistance and review any available video or witness information.

At the time of the initial report, the investigation remained active. The Lawndale hit-and-run crash may develop further as investigators collect evidence and work to identify the driver.

What California Law May Mean for Affected Families

California law requires a driver involved in a collision causing injury or death to stop and fulfill specific duties at the scene. Leaving may violate Vehicle Code Section 20001

Separate from a criminal investigation, the injured teen and eligible relatives of the deceased may have civil claims for losses such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost financial support, and loss of companionship.

Important steps may include:

  • Preserving the scooter, e-bike, clothing, and helmet
  • Requesting nearby surveillance or dashboard-camera footage
  • Obtaining the collision report and witness information
  • Reviewing uninsured motorist coverage if the driver remains unknown

Legal options after a hit-and-run crash depend on the evidence, insurance terms, and each family’s circumstances.
