More Zero-Emission Charging Stations in California Soon

Sacramento, California – Last February 14, 2024, the California Energy Commission (CEC) approved a $1.9 billion funding boost for the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure, augmenting a prior $1.8 billion investment. This initiative aims to add 40,000 public zero-emission charging stations and other zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) facilities across California, aligning with Governor Gavin Newsom’s $10 billion ZEV vision, which also enjoys federal support.

The plan prioritizes equipping disadvantaged and low-income communities, targeting at least 50% of the ZEV infrastructure to alleviate air pollution impacts. With federal and other funds, California sets its sights on a 250,000 public EV charger network, supplementing private and home setups.

Governor Newsom emphasized California’s leading role in creating the largest zero-emission network in the U.S., underscoring a significant stride towards a cleaner transportation future. This comes as California nears 2 million ZEV sales, necessitating these investments to meet infrastructure demands. Legislation extending the Clean Transportation Program secures EV charging funding through 2035, with the CEC introducing charger reliability and transparency regulations.

In 2023, ZEVs comprised 25% of California’s new car sales, surpassing early targets for zero-emission trucks and fast charger installations. The booming ZEV sector highlights electric vehicles as a key export and catalyst for manufacturing and job growth.

As California continues to lead the way in electric and zero-emission vehicle infrastructure, the California community is encouraged to consider these sustainable transportation options. By embracing EVs and supporting the development of an extensive charging and refueling network, individuals can play a pivotal role in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
