Los Angeles, California — Supporters of Fil-Am candidate Ysabel Jurado are calling on voters in Los Angeles’ 14th Council District to support her bid against incumbent Kevin de León. If elected, tenant rights attorney Ysabel Jurado would make history as the first Filipino American to serve on the Los Angeles City Council, marking a significant milestone for the Fil-Am community.
Jurado’s backers argue she offers a fresh approach for downtown and northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods, which they claim have suffered under “failed leadership.” At a recent event in Boyle Heights, Emiliana Guereca, founder of Women’s March Action, highlighted the significance of Jurado’s candidacy. She described Jurado as a representative of the community’s needs for resources and progress.
Speakers at the event accused de León’s campaign of harassing Jurado and her family, while a spokesperson for his campaign did not respond to requests for comment.
De León’s political career has faced controversy, including his involvement in a leaked 2021 conversation about redistricting strategies that contained derogatory remarks toward several ethnic communities. The backlash has led to calls for his resignation, though he remains in office.
Michelle Atwood, from LPAC, alleged de León’s supporters have targeted Jurado online with sexist and homophobic language. Additionally, Guereca pointed to a history of violence accusations involving Najee Ali, a de León ally, as troubling.
Jurado recently faced criticism after a remark about police funding, which she later clarified, stressing her commitment to addressing systemic injustice.
