Los Angeles, California — Ysabel Jurado, a Fil-Am candidate for the Los Angeles City Council, has sparked controversy following remarks made during a meeting with Cal State Los Angeles students. Jurado, who is running to represent the 14th District, quoted a lyric from N.W.A.’s 1988 protest song, “F– the Police,” in response to a question on police spending.
The exchange, recorded and later shared by local media outlet Westside Current, quickly drew backlash from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing LAPD officers. The union condemned Jurado’s comments, stating that she “revealed her true colors” regarding her views on law enforcement.
In a statement released on Monday, Jurado defended her remarks, explaining that the lyric was part of a broader discussion on systemic injustice and police accountability. She emphasized her commitment to public safety and expressed concerns over the city’s financial strain due to police misconduct settlements.
Jurado, a tenant rights attorney, leads the race against incumbent Councilman Kevin de León. If elected, she would become the first Fil-Am member of the LA City Council. De León criticized her comments, calling them “disrespectful” and reaffirming his support for law enforcement.
