San Diego, California – The city of San Diego recently paid tribute to a fallen Fil-Am police officer, Austin Machitar, by renaming the North Clairemont Community Park in his honor. Officer Machitar, who served the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) with dedication and compassion, was killed in the line of duty on August 26, 2024. His legacy of service and mentorship inspires law enforcement and Filipino Americans across California.
Park Rededicated to Honor Officer Machitar’s Legacy
A year after his tragic passing, city officials, police colleagues, and community members gathered at 4421 Bannock Avenue for the park’s rededication ceremony. Mayor Todd Gloria, SDPD Chief Scott Wahl, and other dignitaries led the tribute, recognizing Machitar’s five years of service with the department’s Northern Division.
The renaming received support from the Clairemont Community Planning Group, local councils, and the San Diego Police Officers Association, which funded the park’s new signage. The site was selected because of its proximity to where the officer served and the meaningful connections he established in the Clairemont neighborhood.
On the night he died, Officer Machitar and his partner, Officer Zachary Martinez, were responding to a high-speed chase when their patrol car was hit by a fleeing vehicle going over 90 mph. The crash killed Machitar and the suspect, while Martinez survived with critical injuries.
