San Diego, California — A Filipino American police officer with the San Diego Police Department tragically lost his life, and another remains in critical condition following a devastating traffic crash late Monday night.
The collision, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Doliva Drive, involved multiple vehicles, including a high-speed BMW driven by a suspect fleeing a traffic stop.
Officer Austin Machitar, a 30-year-old Filipino American and father of four, was driving the police SUV when it was struck by the suspect’s vehicle. The impact was so severe that it caused the SUV to catch fire, resulting in Machitar’s death at the scene.
His partner, Officer Zach Martinez, was ejected through the windshield and is currently fighting for his life in a trauma center.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “Last night, we lost a good one.” He described Machitar as a dedicated officer with a contagious smile and a solid commitment to serving his community.
The suspect, believed to be a teenage boy, was also killed in the crash. The California Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation due to the gravity of the incident.
Filipino American journalist Maria Arcega-Dunn mourned Machitar’s death, emphasizing the profound impact on the Filipino community in San Diego.
