Oakland, California – An Oakland man has pleaded guilty to a federal sex trafficking charge involving a minor he initially contacted through Instagram. The case highlights concerns about online exploitation and the risks children may face when interacting with strangers on social media.
Oakland Man Admits to Trafficking Minor After Instagram Contact
Federal prosecutors announced that Keynin McGee, 27, of Oakland, pleaded guilty to sex trafficking a minor following an investigation into incidents beginning in 2021.
According to court documents, McGee initially connected with the girl on Instagram. After months of communication, he purchased a bus ticket for her to travel and meet him. Upon her arrival, McGee brought the minor to a hotel, where he photographed her and advertised her on a commercial sex website.
Prosecutors stated that he subsequently transported the victim to locations in Oakland and San Francisco, directing her to approach potential buyers and engage in commercial sex acts.
McGee faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years, with sentencing scheduled for January 19, 2027.
Understanding Legal Protections for Child Sex Trafficking Survivors
The Oakland case illustrates how online recruitment can lead to exploitation. Under 18 U.S.C. § 1591, sex trafficking involving minors is a federal offense, and prosecutors do not need to establish force, fraud, or coercion when a child is exploited for commercial sex.
California Civil Code § 52.5 also provides legal remedies for trafficking survivors.
Depending on the circumstances, survivors may pursue:
- Compensatory damages: Financial recovery for medical expenses, psychological treatment, and other documented losses.
- Punitive damages: Additional compensation when legally justified by the defendant’s conduct.
- Civil claims: Legal action against responsible parties, separate from criminal prosecution.
Families can preserve relevant messages, online communications, and financial records as potential evidence.
