San Diego, California — Fil-Am police officer Austin Machitar, 30, was remembered in a heartfelt memorial service Saturday in El Cajon after being killed in the line of duty last month. Machitar lost his life during a high-speed pursuit in San Diego, leaving a legacy of service, courage, and dedication.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, a fellow Filipino American, honored Machitar by highlighting his dedication as an officer who exemplified the values of public service. Gloria emphasized Machitar’s courage and unwavering commitment to protecting his community during the Shadow Mountain Community Church ceremony.
Machitar was killed when his patrol vehicle was struck by a fleeing suspect’s car, which had evaded a late-night traffic stop. The impact of the crash caused the police vehicle to catch fire, claiming Machitar’s life instantly. His partner, Officer Zachary Martinez, survived the crash and was also honored at the service.
