Long Beach, California — On October 15, Long Beach celebrated its third annual Filipino American History Month at City Hall, recognizing the significant contributions of Filipino immigrants to the community. This month is observed each October to mark the arrival of the first Filipino immigrants in Morro Bay on October 18, 1587.
The Filipino American National Historical Society first acknowledged the commemoration in 1992 and federally recognized in 2009.
According to the 2022 census, Long Beach has the largest Asian ethnic community in the city, particularly concentrated in West Long Beach, with over 20,000 residents of Filipino descent.
The celebration featured various speakers, musicians, and cultural dance performances, providing a vibrant showcase of Filipino culture. Attendees also enjoyed traditional Filipino cuisine from Gemmae Bake Shop. Additionally, a resource fair presented opportunities through local Filipino organizations.
Councilmembers Roberto Uranga, Suely Saro, and Joni Ricks-Oddie supported the event, reflecting the city’s commitment to honoring Filipino American heritage and strengthening community ties.
