Sacramento, California — Jessica Caloza made history as the first Filipina elected to the California Assembly. She officially assumed her role as the representative for the 52nd District during a swearing-in ceremony held Monday at the State Capitol.
The event, attended by family, community leaders, and supporters, marked a significant milestone for the Filipino American community. Caloza, whose district includes South Glendale, East Los Angeles, and Northeast Los Angeles, expressed her gratitude and commitment to advocating for working families.
As the first Filipina elected to the State Legislature, Caloza expressed pride in paving the way for women of color to participate in decision-making spaces. She emphasized that this moment symbolizes opportunities for future generations.
Caloza defeated opponent Franky Carrillo with 66.9% of the vote. Final results will be certified on December 13. Her priorities include addressing rising living costs, expanding affordable housing, creating sustainable jobs, supporting small businesses, and strengthening public schools.
Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Caloza is a first-generation immigrant and the first in her family to graduate college. Her career spans public service roles, including work with California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the Obama administration. Her journey reflects a commitment to empowering marginalized communities and advancing social justice.
