Los Angeles, California — Filipino Americans Jessica Caloza and Christopher Cabaldon are entering the final days of their campaigns for historic seats in the California Legislature.
Caloza, a millennial and advocate for public service, is running for the State Assembly, while Cabaldon, a seasoned former mayor of West Sacramento, seeks a position in the California Senate. Both candidates are on the verge of becoming the first Filipino Americans to serve in these roles.
Caloza, who is running to represent Assembly District 52, expressed gratitude for the support of the Fil-Am community. Her team is intensifying district outreach efforts, including neighborhoods like Eagle Rock, Silver Lake, and Echo Park.
She has earned endorsements from major unions and the *Los Angeles Times*. Throughout her campaign, Caloza has emphasized her experience in higher education, immigration policy, and reproductive rights from her work with the Obama administration and California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
Cabaldon, running in Senate District 3, hopes to represent Napa, Solano, and parts of Sacramento and Contra Costa counties. Known for his transformative work as West Sacramento’s mayor, Cabaldon stressed the importance of his candidacy against a Republican opponent who he says opposes climate action and affordable housing initiatives.
Cabaldon would be the first Filipino American in the California Senate if elected, a milestone he believes will amplify Filipino American stories in the state’s legislative landscape.
