Filipino American Delegates Make Waves at DNC in Chicago

Chicago — California Attorney General Rob Bonta and North Carolina State Representative Maria Cervania are leading a record number of Filipino American delegates at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago. The convention, which began Monday, marks a significant moment in the political engagement of the Filipino American community.

Bonta, the honorary chair, and Cervania, the honorary deputy chair, head the Filipino Americans for Harris-Walz delegation. This diverse group of over 40 delegates hails from various states, including California, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Illinois, and territories such as Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

This unprecedented level of participation marks a significant milestone in our ongoing journey toward greater political engagement and representation.” the Filipino Americans for Harris-Walz stated.

The convention will culminate on Thursday, when Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz are expected to formally accept the Democratic nominations for president and vice president, respectively.

Bonta, the first Filipino American to serve in the California State Legislature, has held the position of California Attorney General since 2021. His leadership alongside Cervania, a pioneering Filipino American in North Carolina politics, underscores the growing influence of Filipino Americans in the national political landscape.
