Los Angeles, California — Fil-Am Assemblymember Jessica Caloza has introduced two bills to aid those impacted by the recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Caloza, the first Filipina elected to the California Assembly, emphasized the urgent need for action to support recovery and rebuilding efforts.
One bill, AB 262, proposes direct cash assistance of up to $1,500 per household to help families address immediate needs like housing, food, and transportation. The second bill, AB 265, seeks to establish a $100 million fund to provide grants to small businesses and nonprofits, assisting them in rebuilding and regaining stability.
These initiatives coincide with Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of legislation allocating $2.5 billion in wildfire relief funds. This funding will support various recovery efforts, including debris removal, infrastructure repair, and logistical support.
Senator Ben Allen, representing the fire-stricken Pacific Palisades area, stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to recovery. This approach would combine financial assistance with strong policies prioritizing the needs of victims and survivors throughout the rebuilding process.
