San Francisco, California — Tragedy struck at Powell Street BART Station in San Francisco on Monday night when 74-year-old Corazon Dandan, an elderly Filipina resident, lost her life after being pushed into an oncoming train.
Dandan, who had just finished her shift at a local hotel, was waiting for her train when the suspect, Trevor Belmont, allegedly shoved her onto the tracks as a train approached.
The impact caused her to hit her head and fall onto the platform. Despite efforts to save her, Dandan succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Belmont, 49, also known as Hoak Taing and described as transient, was apprehended at the scene by authorities. BART officials have stated that investigations are underway to determine the motive behind this tragic incident.
Born in the Philippines, Dandan immigrated to San Francisco in the 1980s. Although she did not have children of her own, she played a significant role in the lives of her nieces and nephews, supporting their education.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for safety and security in public spaces. Our deepest sympathies are with the Dandan family as they navigate this devastating loss.
