Filipino Island Fest in Alameda Honors Heritage and Unity

Alameda, California — The Filipino Island Fest returned to Alameda Point Waterfront Park, drawing tens of thousands in a vibrant display of culture, unity, and resilience. Now in its second year, the festival has become a beacon for Filipino Americans across the Bay Area—celebrating heritage, history, and the power of community. With music, food, and advocacy at its heart, the Filipino Island Fest continues to grow as a symbol of solidarity and pride.

Massive Turnout Highlights Cultural and Political Pride

Over 20,000 people attended the Filipino Island Fest on October 4, doubling last year’s attendance. The event was organized by Cynthia Bonta, Pia Barton, Joann Guitarte, and Kristoffer Perez in honor of Filipino American History Month. Opening ceremonies featured heartfelt speeches linking Filipino history to today’s social and political climate.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the first Filipino American to hold the position, spoke about courage and democracy, referencing milestones like the People Power Revolution. Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas also addressed the crowd, urging support for Proposition 50, a temporary redistricting measure on California’s November ballot.

Culture, Connection, and Community Strength

The festival reflected the spirit of Filipino pride and connection, offering free entry to ensure accessibility for all.

Highlights included:

  • 150+ vendors featuring Filipino food, art, and wellness products.
  • Live performances by local dancers, musicians, and American Idol alum Eli-Mac.
  • A Filipino American history museum exhibit honoring the community’s contributions.
  • Support for small businesses is encouraged through community-driven spending.

Festival co-organizer Joann Guitarte emphasized that the event was built “for the community, not profit,” relying on grants, volunteers, and sponsorships to thrive.
