Los Angeles, California — Filipino American Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado of Los Angeles District 14 has announced the postponement of all Independence Day celebrations in her district due to heightened immigration enforcement activity in the area.
After community discussions raised safety concerns, events scheduled in Boyle Heights, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, and other parts of Northeast LA have been deferred. Jurado, the first Filipino-American elected to the Los Angeles City Council, decided in consultation with neighborhood councils and local leaders.
“We’re responding to the crisis with the presence of federal agents in the community,” said Alejandra Alarcon, Jurado’s spokesperson.
Key Cancellations:
- El Sereno’s 66th Annual Independence Day Parade
Organizers cited community safety, stating the event typically draws over 1,200 participants. - Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Summer Block Party
Postponed “out of an abundance of caution” amid county-wide ICE activity.
The postponements follow multiple reports of aggressive and legally questionable immigration enforcement practices, including:
- Masked agents using unmarked vehicles
- Arrests without warrants
- Alleged inhumane treatment in detention
In Culver City, a rally is planned in support of street vendor Ambrocio “Enrique” Lozano, reportedly detained by ICE without due process. He has served the community for over two decades.
County Supervisor Hilda Solis will introduce a motion Tuesday urging legal action against potentially unconstitutional ICE operations.
