Workers Over Billionaires: Labor Day Rally in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, California — On September 1, the Filipino American community gathered in Historic Filipinotown to observe Labor Day with a powerful demonstration. Known as the Labor Day rally “Workers Over Billionaires,” the event highlighted the ongoing fight for immigrant rights, economic justice, and dignity for working families. Beyond celebration, participants used the holiday to raise awareness for voices often overlooked in labor and migrant struggles across the country.

A Day of Action in Los Angeles and Beyond

On Labor Day, Filipino Americans and allies convened at Unidad Park in Los Angeles for the “Workers Over Billionaires” rally from 10 a.m. to noon. Community leaders, labor groups, and activists spoke out against widening economic inequality, calling for stronger protections for immigrant and marginalized workers.

The rally included speeches, performances, and a neighborhood march, with organizers emphasizing the importance of nonviolent action. Later that afternoon, the movement grew as a migrant caravan headed to the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington, where hundreds gathered to demand the release of detainees and highlight human rights issues.

Workers’ Rights in California

Events like the Labor Day rally highlight the importance of legal protections available to employees in California. Workers experiencing unfair treatment, discrimination, or unsafe conditions can pursue legal claims such as:

  • Wage and Hour Claims: Ensuring workers receive proper pay, including overtime and minimum wage.
  • Workplace Discrimination: Protecting employees from discrimination based on race, national origin, gender, or immigration status.
  • Retaliation and Wrongful Termination: Safeguarding workers who speak out against unlawful practices.
  • Health and Safety Protections: Enforcing employer responsibility under state and federal labor laws.

For Filipino American workers, especially those facing cultural and immigration challenges, understanding these rights is crucial for strengthening workplace protections.
