Two Killed in Highway 183 Hit-and-Run Crash Near Castroville

Salinas, California — A devastating Highway 183 hit-and-run crash has left families mourning and raised questions about accountability under California law. The tragic incident highlights the dangers of reckless driving and the serious consequences that follow when a driver flees the scene of a collision.

Deadly Collision on Highway 183

According to the California Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Kassandra Zavala of Salinas was identified as the driver involved in last week’s fatal Highway 183 hit-and-run crash. Investigators reported that Zavala’s vehicle rear-ended a red sedan, causing it to be pushed into the path of an oncoming semi-truck just south of Castroville.

Two passengers, 35-year-old Marcos Alia from Salinas and 31-year-old Aristeo Jimenez from Port Hueneme, were pronounced dead at the scene. The 20-year-old driver of the sedan remains in critical condition in the hospital.

Zavala suffered moderate injuries and was discharged from medical care. CHP officials confirmed they will refer the case to prosecutors in search of charges for vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run.

Compensation Available in Hit-and-Run Cases

Victims and their families involved in a Highway 183 hit-and-run crash may face specific legal challenges. California law mandates that drivers involved in crashes stay at the scene and offer aid. Failing to do so can lead to criminal charges and civil liability (California Vehicle Code §20001).

Survivors and families may pursue compensation for:

  • Medical expenses and rehabilitation costs for injured victims.
  • Wrongful death claims to recover damages for funeral costs and loss of support.
  • Pain and suffering damages for the emotional toll of the crash.
  • Punitive damages in cases involving gross negligence or unlawful conduct.

Understanding these rights is crucial for those affected. This is especially true for the Filipino-American community in California, who may feel overwhelmed when navigating complex legal systems after such tragedies.
