Los Angeles, California — In memory of Joseph Ileto, a Fil-Am postal worker murdered in a hate crime, the Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL) will hold a special tribute during its 41st Anniversary Gala on October 10, 2024. The event coincides with the 25th anniversary of Ileto’s tragic death.
On August 10, 1999, Ileto was fatally shot by white supremacist Buford O. Furrow Jr. while delivering mail in Chatsworth, California. Before killing Ileto, Furrow had attacked the Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills, wounding five people. Furrow later admitted to targeting Ileto due to his Filipino descent and federal employment.
The “Unite in Action” gala will also honor Lillian Ileto, Joseph’s mother, for her tireless anti-violence advocacy. A tribute performance by Jennifer Paz and Anthony Fedorov is planned.
Fil-Am entertainment executive Fritz Friedman will receive the 2024 Public Image Award, which actor Lou Diamond Phillips will present. Additionally, mental health professional and LGBTQIA+ activist Eddy Gana will receive the 2024 Joseph Ileto Courage Award for his resilience and advocacy.
AAPI leaders from various sectors will gather at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles for the event, which journalist David Ono will emcee.
