Los Angeles, California — A longtime Los Angeles Police Department sergeant was killed early Monday morning while responding to a prior collision on the 405 Freeway.
Sergeant I. Shiou Deng, 53, died at approximately 2 a.m. on June 23 after he was struck by a passing vehicle near Wilshire Boulevard on the southbound side of the 405. Authorities say he had exited his patrol car to assist at the scene of an earlier crash when the incident occurred.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that one individual had already died in the initial collision. Sgt. Deng had just arrived to render aid when he was hit.
