Authorities report that the Highway 371 rollover crash happened around 7 a.m. on State Route 371 near Homestead Road, close to the community of Anza.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Temecula Area office reports that a 27-year-old woman from Palm Desert was driving a 2006 Honda Insight southbound. For reasons still under investigation, she crossed into the northbound lane.
The Honda collided with a northbound 2016 Toyota Tacoma operated by a 56-year-old man from Aguanga. Following the crash, both vehicles swerved onto the east dirt shoulder, with the Toyota overturning onto its side. The female driver of the Honda was declared dead at the scene by Cal Fire paramedics.
The Toyota driver and an 11-year-old passenger were airlifted to a nearby hospital. Authorities stated alcohol does not appear to have been a factor. A SigAlert closed parts of the highway for several hours while crews cleared the wreckage.
