Filipino Green Card Holder Arrested for Alleged ISIS Support

Long Beach, California – A recent federal case has prompted concern in the Filipino-American community after a Filipino green card holder was arrested in Long Beach for allegedly sending funds to a known terrorist organization. The incident highlights the need to understand national security laws and the legal risks of such actions. Filipino green card holders in California should be aware of the potential consequences of federal terrorism charges.

Arrest and Alleged Activities

Federal agents detained 28-year-old Mark Lorenzo Villanueva in Long Beach, California, on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Villanueva made 12 payments totaling $1,615 over five months through Western Union to two individuals believed to be connected to ISIS fighters overseas.

He reportedly connected with the suspected fighters through social media, expressing interest in joining their group and saying, “It’s an honor to fight and die for our faith.” Authorities assert that he also mentioned having a bomb and knives. During his arrest, what looked like an improvised explosive device was found in his bedroom.

Villanueva is currently facing federal charges and could serve up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Key Legal and Community Considerations

  • Federal Charges: Attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization is a serious federal offense under U.S. law.
  • Presumption of Innocence: Villanueva is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, like all defendants.
  • Immigration Impact: A conviction could lead to severe consequences, including potential loss of permanent residency or deportation.
  • Community Safety: The case has drawn attention to issues of safety, security, and radicalization within immigrant communities.
  • Legal Representation: Cases involving terrorism require skilled legal counsel experienced in federal criminal law and immigration defense.
