Los Angeles, California — The Mestizo, a Filipino fashion brand founded by Gabe Gonzales and Robert Kolosso, recently launched its first physical showroom at 3308 Helms Avenue in Culver City. Known for its unique, modern interpretations of traditional Filipino clothing, the brand has gained popularity since debuting online in 2021, primarily for its boleros and barongs inspired by Filipino culture.
Gonzales, CEO and lead designer, grew up in Manila and was profoundly influenced by his mother, a seasoned fashion professional. Though originally trained as a healthcare executive, he redirected his career to focus on fashion, motivated by a deep-seated passion for design. His partner, Kolosso, brings business expertise from a background in the automotive industry.
Kolosso explained that their brand reimagines Filipino fashion for today’s world and noted that opening a showroom became essential as consumer behavior evolved post-pandemic. He added that the showroom allows customers to engage with their designs fully.
Gonzales shared that the journey had been challenging, mainly due to his lack of formal training in fashion design. Self-doubt was initially a significant hurdle, but encouragement from mentors helped him build confidence.
The Mestizo’s showroom marks a significant step for the brand, creating a space where Filipino heritage meets contemporary fashion. Gonzales hoped it would inspire pride within the Fil-Am community and resonate with a broader audience.
