Los Angeles, California – Chef Lord Maynard Llera of Kuya Lord, a renowned Filipino restaurant on Melrose Avenue, has been honored with the James Beard Award for best chef in California. This accolade recognizes his culinary excellence and dedication to showcasing Filipino cuisine.
Having previously worked at Bestia in the Arts District and running a successful Filipino pop-up during the pandemic, Llera fulfilled his dream of opening Kuya Lord in 2022.
The restaurant’s menu, inspired by his childhood in the southern Tagalog region, offers a range of delectable dishes, including slow-roasted pork, garlic java rice, and chami noodles, alongside vegetarian options featuring tofu.
“This award signifies the recognition of Filipino cuisine,” remarked a pleased Hollywood resident, Manuel Dizon. The James Beard Awards, often likened to the “Oscars of Food,” celebrate outstanding culinary talents across the nation.
Llera’s sentiments echoed the significance of this achievement: “Hard work and perseverance really pays off. It means a lot because, you know, it represents us. I made, you know, my country proud.”
His success not only brings honor to himself but also shines a spotlight on the rich culinary heritage of the Philippines.
