Oakland, California — Nikki Fortunato Bas, a lifelong community organizer and advocate for workers’ rights, has made history as the interim mayor of Oakland, California. A daughter of Filipino immigrants, Bas is the first Filipino American woman to hold this position in the city’s history.
Bas took office on December 17, 2024, following Mayor Sheng Thao’s recall. Bas, who previously served as the president of the Oakland City Council, was next in line to the mayoral role. As interim mayor, she is committed to addressing key city issues, including the budget and public safety.
In addition to her mayoral duties, Bas is preparing for a new chapter in her political career. On January 6, 2025, she will begin her term as a member of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, representing District 5. Bas won the seat in a tight race, securing 50.15% of the vote over her opponent.
Bas has been known throughout her career for her dedication to social justice, equity, and community-driven change. Her work in Oakland has focused on violence prevention, housing, and economic justice. As she continues to break barriers, Bas remains a powerful voice for Filipino Americans and marginalized communities in the Bay Area.
