Cerritos, California — A Filipino American mayor is once again set to lead the City of Cerritos, showcasing ongoing representation of Fil-Am leaders in local government. The upcoming appointment highlights the community’s growth and the rising role of Filipino Americans in civic leadership in California.
Filipino American Mayor to Take Office After Annual Leadership Transition
The City of Cerritos is expected to appoint Mayor Pro Tem Linda Provido Johnson as its next Filipino American mayor during the City Council’s annual reorganization on April 8. If confirmed by her fellow council members, Johnson will serve a one-year term, succeeding current Mayor Frank Aurelio Yokoyama.
Johnson will become the third Filipino American to hold the mayoral position in Cerritos. A long-time resident since 1971, she was elected to the City Council in 2022 and later appointed Mayor Pro Tem in 2025.
Her public service background includes serving on the ABC Unified School District Board of Education and a 39-year career with Los Angeles County, including work with the District Attorney’s Office. Cerritos’ current council reflects strong Asian American representation, including Filipino American and Taiwanese American members.
