Daly City, California – A Filipina American experienced a traumatic robbery in the parking lot of Manila Oriental Market on July 12, highlighting the need for increased safety measures in Daly City.
Gloria Alcantara, on an errand to pick up purple yams for her upcoming birthday, was robbed at the market’s parking lot. As she returned to her car, a man approached her, grabbed her wallet, and fled in a waiting vehicle. Despite chasing the car, Alcantara could not recover her belongings.
Incidents like this have become more frequent, prompting authorities to enhance security. The Daly City Police Department reported several similar crimes, including a more violent incident on July 20, where a suspect smashed a car window to steal a purse.
Mayor Juslyn Manalo acknowledged the persistence of muggers in her city and explained the police department’s response. Patrols have been increased, particularly around King Plaza and Serramonte area gas stations, but the lack of a specific pattern or trend makes it challenging to focus resources effectively.
Mayor Manalo offered these safety tips:
- Keep valuables out of sight, even in your vehicle.
- Stay in well-lit areas or around other people.
- Report suspicious behavior to store staff or call 911.
Grateful to be uninjured, Alcantara emphasized the importance of vigilance and community cooperation to ensure public safety. The Fil-Am community is reminded to stay alert and cautious to avoid becoming victims of similar crimes.
