Fil-Am Mayor Makes History in Pinole

Pinole, California — Pinole, California, inaugurated its first Fil-Am mayor, Cameron Sasai, who is the youngest mayor in the city’s 120-year history. Sasai’s election marks a significant milestone, building upon his previous achievement as Pinole’s first Filipino American council member in 2022.

During his inaugural address, Mayor Sasai outlined his priorities, which include police reform and accountability, affordable housing, environmental justice, and economic development. He emphasized his commitment to racial justice, improving police-community relations, and revitalizing the city’s downtown area.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who administered Sasai’s oath of office, praised Sasai’s dedication to public service and his commitment to creating a more inclusive California.

Sasai’s inauguration was celebrated as a significant achievement for the Filipino American community. Various community leaders and organizations, including the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) and Fr. Geoffrey Baraan of St. Joseph Church in Pinole, expressed support.

Sasai’s extensive experience includes serving on the WestCAT Board of Directors and the West Contra Costa Transportation Commission. He holds a Political Science–Public Service degree from the University of California, Davis, and currently works as a LEAD Filipino public policy and advocacy coordinator.
