Fil-Am Lawyer Ysabel Jurado Leads in LA’s 14th District

Los Angeles, CaliforniaFil-Am Lawyer Ysabel Jurado has surged ahead in a closely contested race for the 2nd position in the city’s 14th District City Council seat. Jurado’s momentum continues to grow, with a lead of 251 votes over Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, garnering 6,056 votes or 22.52 percent compared to Santiago’s 5,805 or 21.59 percent.

Councilman Kevin De León, the incumbent, maintains his lead with 6,641 votes or 24.69 percent. As none of the eight candidates in the field are projected to secure a majority, the top two candidates will proceed to a runoff in November.

Jurado’s rise to the second spot comes after a series of updates in the ballot count, with her securing 230 additional votes in the latest update released by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. Previously holding the third position, Jurado’s steady climb reflects her growing support among voters.

A staunch advocate for affordable housing and tenant rights, Jurado’s campaign resonates with her background as a single mother and the daughter of undocumented Filipino immigrants. Her journey from Pasadena City College to UCLA Law School, where she specialized in Critical Race Studies and Public Interest Law and Policy, exemplifies her dedication to public service.

Jurado’s platform prioritizes expanding affordable housing, combating homelessness, supporting small businesses, addressing climate change, and fostering economic equity. Her experience as a housing rights lawyer underscores her commitment to advocating for marginalized communities and safeguarding their interests.

While facing formidable competition from Santiago, Jurado’s grassroots campaign and commitment to justice have galvanized support from diverse community sectors. Jurado would make history as the first Filipino American to serve on the council, marking a significant milestone for Filipino representation in local government if elected in the LA City Council election.
