Los Angeles, California — Fil-Am residents of Southern California are reeling from the devastating wildfires ravaging the region, with many experiencing loss and displacement.
Among them is Benny Uy, a facility assistant at the Altadena Senior Center, who witnessed the destruction of the building on Wednesday. The center, where local seniors gathered, was engulfed in flames after strong Santa Ana winds fanned the fire.
Uy said he never imagined it would escalate this quickly. It felt like an apocalypse. Many of the seniors he had befriended lost their homes, and the LA fires have left widespread devastation.
Former Sierra Madre Mayor Rachelle Arizmendi, who evacuated with her husband and dog, expressed gratitude for the support from her community. “Let’s keep our community, region, and dedicated first responders in our thoughts and prayers,” she said in a LinkedIn post.
Fil-Am singer Charmaine Clamor also faced evacuation orders when the Sunset Fire prompted more warnings. Although she didn’t evacuate, Clamor remains thankful for the safety of her family and home. “I feel devastated for those who have lost their homes and lives,” she shared on social media.
With over 700,000 Filipinos in Southern California, the Philippine Consulate has been active, providing support and issuing safety advisories.
