Santa Ana, California — Filipino American Rhean Jalipa Fontanoza, 46, has been charged with the murder of his childhood friend and co-worker, 50-year-old Expedito Cuesta De Leon, in Orange County, California.
Fontanoza has been charged with murder with special circumstances for a drive-by shooting and lying in wait, along with an enhancement for using a firearm that resulted in death. Prosecutors allege Fontanoza shot De Leon 14 times within 19 seconds at approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Chrysler and Fleming in Irvine.
Both men were UPS drivers residing in Aliso Viejo. Fontanoza, currently on disability leave, allegedly sought out De Leon’s route using a company computer before tracking him down in a new vehicle.
After De Leon makes a delivery, Fontanoza is accused of shooting him from a pickup truck. Surveillance footage captured Fontanoza’s silver Honda Ridgeline fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement apprehended Fontanoza on Santiago Canyon Road after a brief standoff, utilizing tear gas and a police dog to subdue him. Fontanoza was hospitalized following his arrest, with his injuries remaining undisclosed.
Fontanoza did not enter a plea during his Monday arraignment; the hearing was postponed to June 10 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the killing.
UPS expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the unusual nature of the crime and their focus on supporting employees and families affected by the tragedy. The investigation is ongoing.
A public viewing for De Leon will be held on May 29, 2024, followed by a Mass and burial on May 30, honoring his life and service.
Kapwa Justice extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Expedito Cuesta De Leon during this profoundly difficult time. We stand united with the Fil-Am community in mourning the loss of a beloved member and offering our heartfelt condolences.
