California — The 2024 general election marked a historic step for Filipino American (Fil-Am) representation across the U.S., as Fil-Am candidates achieved unprecedented victories at both state and local levels.
In California, Jessica Caloza became the first Filipina American elected to the state Legislature, representing Assembly District 52, which spans parts of Los Angeles, including Eagle Rock and Echo Park. A former Los Angeles Public Works commissioner, Caloza emphasized her commitment to women’s rights and community advocacy.
Christopher Cabaldon, former mayor of West Sacramento, made history as the first Fil-Am elected to the California State Senate. Cabaldon now represents Senate District 3, which includes Napa, Sonoma, and Vallejo.
In Los Angeles, Ysabel Jurado won a seat on the City Council for District 14, defeating incumbent Kevin de León. A tenant rights attorney, Jurado thanked her supporters, crediting her victory to a grassroots movement focused on issues like affordable housing and public safety.
Mayor Todd Gloria secured re-election in San Diego with a strong lead, while Ryyn Schumacher became Ventura City Council’s first Fil-Am member.
Northern California also saw notable wins: Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo topped the polls, and Fil-Am councilmember Glenn Sylvester secured another term. Across the country, Fil-Am candidates, from Wisconsin to North Carolina, achieved key victories, highlighting the growing influence and representation of Fil-Ams as they advocate for equity, safety, and diverse community needs.
