Exploring Immigration and Trafficking in ‘Home of the Brave’

Los Angeles, California — The Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) has premiered its first self-produced documentary, “Home of the Brave,” which addresses significant issues of human trafficking and immigration in Los Angeles.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama, the documentary follows PWC Worker leaders Amelia and Lord as they navigate these critical challenges.

According to PWC Executive Director Aqui Versoza Soriano, “These are stories of our members. That’s what we wanted to share because sometimes people in our community don’t understand how the immigration system is set up unfairly, especially to our community.”

Lord Lattao, one of the featured workers, urges resilience amidst adversity. “Don’t be scared, and don’t lose hope. The Lord is always there,” he said.

“Home of the Brave” has received rave audience reviews, with many moving to tears. Plans are already in place to screen the film in other communities, including Texas.

The documentary’s premiere coincides with ongoing debates about immigration reform, a significant topic in the upcoming November elections. President Joe Biden’s recent executive order allows undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for permanent residency and eventual citizenship. PWC played a crucial role in lobbying for this order.

Soriano hoped the film would further their advocacy efforts, stating, “This executive order is going to make it possible to have a pathway to adjusting status, so their families don’t have to stay in limbo as mixed-status families.”

Lord, who expects to gain legal status through a human trafficking visa, hopes elected officials will address various immigration issues affecting Filipinos. Wherever the film is shown next, PWC and Lattao aspire to inspire and empower viewers with their message.
