Community Leaders Advance Fil-Am Domestic Violence Awareness

Colma, California — In recognition of Fil-Am domestic violence awareness, two neighboring Bay Area communities—Colma and Daly City—are leading important initiatives this October. Both cities will celebrate Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and Filipino American History Month, highlighting heritage, resilience, and advocacy. Community efforts unite leaders and organizations to raise awareness about intimate partner violence and support Filipino American survivors.

Community Action: Colma and Daly City Take the Lead

At their upcoming council meetings, Colma on October 8 and Daly City on October 13, local leaders will issue proclamations recognizing Fil-Am domestic violence prevention as a key public concern. The sessions will feature presentations from the Alliance for Community Empowerment (ALLICE), a nonprofit led by Filipino Americans advocating for education and intervention.

In 2023, San Mateo County reported five domestic violence-related deaths, including that of 27-year-old Filipina Frances Lucero, tragically killed by her ex-partner in Daly City. This prompted creation of a countywide Domestic Violence Task Force, supported by ALLICE and local officials committed to expanding awareness, outreach, and survivor resources.

Empowering the Fil-Am Community Through Awareness

The Fil-Am domestic violence awareness movement continues to grow through collaboration between municipalities, nonprofits, and community leaders. Their efforts emphasize prevention, education, and the power of speaking out:

  • Workshops and Training: ALLICE conducts workshops for town staff, first responders, and community members to recognize and address intimate partner abuse.
  • Survivor Stories: Public testimonies, such as that of Colma Council Member Joanne del Rosario, help reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help.
  • Cultural Connection: Rooted in Filipino values of family and unity, initiatives blend cultural sensitivity with professional mental health support.
  • Education Partnerships: Daly City Mayor Rod Daus-Magbual and local educators integrate discussions on colonial history, identity, and abuse awareness in academic settings.
