Celebrate Fil-Am Farmworkers at Fall Anihan Event

Lake County, California — Remagination Farm will hold its first Fall Anihan Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., celebrating the harvest season while paying tribute to Fil-Am farmworkers and their historical contributions to labor rights.

The event commemorates the Delano Grape Strike of Sept. 8, 1965, when Filipino farmworkers, led by Larry Itliong, walked off the fields to protest low wages and poor working conditions. This strike united all farmworkers and led to the formation of the United Farm Workers (UFW) in collaboration with Cesar Chavez, resulting in improved wages, benefits, and protections for agricultural workers.

Robyn Magalit Rodriguez, founder of Remagination Farm, noted that the festival represents both a reflection on past struggles and a celebration of the community’s renewed relationship with the land. She emphasized that attendees will gather not as laborers fighting exploitation, but as stewards of the earth, committed to healing the soil.

Rodriguez and her husband, Joshua Vang, integrate their Hmong and Filipino ancestral farming techniques with local indigenous practices. The farm was founded in 2023 as a tribute to their late son and his dedication to indigenous rights and climate justice.

Here are some of the event’s highlights:

  • Traditional Filipino treats, such as ube zucchini bread and cantaloupe ice candy
  • A sari-sari store offering locally sourced products and farm produce
  • Live performances by Astralogik, DJ Xanh Tran, and other Filipino artists
  • Interactive workshops on cooking, cyanotype art, and youth activities

The celebration also serves as an early kickoff to Filipino American History Month in October, further honoring the contributions of the Fil-Am community.
