California Honors Filipino American History Month with HR 112

San Jose, California — California Assemblymember Alex Lee has introduced House Resolution 112 (HR 112), officially designating October 2024 as Filipino American History Month in California.

The resolution, recently passed by the State Assembly, marks the 437th anniversary of the first recorded arrival of Filipinos in the continental United States. Assemblymember Lee emphasized Filipino Americans’ significant role in the state’s history.

Lee noted that Filipino Americans have been instrumental in shaping California and the nation, playing key roles in advocating for farmworkers’ rights and making significant strides in public office. He added that HR 112 acknowledges these contributions and celebrates the achievements of Filipino Americans across the state.

Filipino Americans have been at the forefront of many critical movements, notably the farm labor movement. The 1965 Delano Grape Strike, led by Filipino American labor leaders like Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, united over 1,500 farm workers in their fight for fair wages and working conditions.

Their efforts, alongside those of Mexican American leaders like César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, led to the formation of the United Farm Workers union, which became a pivotal force in the labor rights movement.

Beyond labor rights, Filipino Americans have also been central to housing justice efforts. In the 1960s and 1970s, activists fought against the displacement of residents from San Francisco’s International Hotel, a landmark of the Filipino community in Manilatown.

Today, Filipino Americans continue to impact public service, healthcare, education, and the arts, contributing to the state’s diverse cultural fabric.

HR 112 recognizes these lasting contributions and reflects the growing influence of the Filipino American community. In Lee’s district, they form the third-largest Asian American group.
