San Diego Appeals Court Upholds Double-Murder Convictions
A California appeals court upheld the first-degree murder convictions of Ali Abulaban in the 2021 deaths of his Fil-Am wife, Ana Abulaban, 28, and her friend, Rayburn Cardenas Barron, 29. Both were fatally shot inside an East Village apartment in San Diego on October 21, 2021.
Abulaban was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder with a multiple-murder special circumstance and later received life without parole plus 50 years to life. His appeal challenged the evidence admitted at trial and argued that jurors received insufficient guidance on intoxication.
The appellate panel rejected those arguments, finding substantial evidence of planning and deliberation before the shootings. The court cited his retention of an apartment key and placement of a device inside the residence.
