Los Angeles, California — A North Texas Filipino American community is helping younger generations explore their Filipino American heritage through a new historical docudrama. The project brings more than 1,000 years of Philippine history to life on screen, connecting major events of the past with the cultural identity many Fil-Ams carry today.
North Texas Fil-Am Group Brings Philippine History to the Screen
The Filipino Leaders Coalition of North Texas (FILCON) created “Philippine History Comes Alive,” a 60-minute docudrama now available on YouTube. The project was developed in connection with the 128th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence and Philippine-American Friendship Day.
The production traces Philippine history from precolonial communities through Spanish and American rule, World War II, independence, authoritarian rule, and the People Power movement. Community members also portrayed historical figures while volunteers supported acting, writing, production, technical work, and other creative roles.
FILCON founder Gus Mercado said interest from younger Filipino Americans helped inspire the project. The organization has long identified the promotion of Filipino culture and heritage, particularly among younger generations, as part of its community mission.
For Fil-Ams in California and across the country, projects like this provide another way to learn about Filipino American heritage and to understand the historical experiences that shaped earlier generations.
