Kaiser Nurses Return to Work After California Strike

Los Angeles, California – Thousands of Kaiser nurses are preparing to return to work after a month-long strike that drew national attention. The labor action involved healthcare professionals in California and Hawaii and followed prolonged contract negotiations.

Strike Ends at Kaiser Facilities Across California and Hawaii

Union officials announced that Kaiser nurses and other healthcare professionals would resume duties at 7 a.m. Tuesday, marking the conclusion of a strike that began on January 26. The work stoppage lasted nearly four weeks and was described by union representatives as one of the largest open-ended strikes involving registered nurses in U.S. history.

According to the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals, recent progress in negotiations led to the decision to end picketing and finalize return-to-work agreements. Approximately 31,000 members participated, including registered nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, midwives, physician assistants, and rehabilitation specialists.

The union previously filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging concerns about the bargaining process. Kaiser Permanente stated that it had offered wage increases and was ready to finalize agreements. Specific contract terms have not yet been publicly disclosed.
