Westley, California – An I-5 multi-vehicle pileup in Stanislaus County has left one person dead and temporarily shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 5. The collision, which involved six vehicles including a semi-truck, unfolded Tuesday afternoon and prompted a large response from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Westley, California: Timeline of the I-5 Multi-Vehicle Pileup
According to CHP, officers responded shortly before 4:15 p.m. to the southbound lanes of I-5, just north of Ingram Creek Road in Westley.
Preliminary findings indicate that a pickup truck traveling in the slow lane sideswiped an SUV that was stopped on the right shoulder. The impact pushed that SUV into another vehicle.
The pickup then reportedly continued forward, sideswiping two sedans before colliding with the rear of a stopped Freightliner semi-truck. The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities stated the driver was not wearing a seat belt. It remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role. All southbound lanes reopened just before 7:45 p.m.
Understanding Legal Rights After a Multi-Vehicle Pileup
When an I-5 multi-vehicle pileup occurs, liability can become complex, particularly when multiple impacts happen in sequence. Even if one driver is primarily responsible, each collision must be carefully evaluated under California’s fault-based system.
Families affected by serious crashes should understand:
- Comparative fault rules may apply if more than one driver is at fault.
- Commercial vehicle involvement (such as a Freightliner) may trigger additional safety and insurance considerations.
- Wrongful death claims may arise when a fatality occurs due to negligence.
- Insurance investigations often analyze seat belt use, road conditions, and driver conduct.
In multi-vehicle crashes, evidence such as dashcam footage, witness statements, and vehicle damage patterns can significantly affect a claim’s outcome.
