Filipino Student Burned in Fraternity House Explosion

Los Angeles, California – A 22-year-old Filipino student’s academic dreams were suddenly interrupted after she sustained life-changing burns during a fraternity house explosion in Worcester, Massachusetts. Yvette Digan, a student studying law at Boston University through an exchange program, experienced a life-changing event at a Zeta Psi fraternity party.

What Happened at the Fraternity Party

On May 21, 2025, Yvette Digan attended a fraternity event hosted by Zeta Psi at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During the party, a highly flammable liquid—believed to be 190-proof Everclear vodka—was allegedly mishandled. According to the lawsuit filed by Digan, one of the fraternity members negligently poured the alcohol, which caused a sudden and destructive fireball explosion.

Digan sustained severe burns to her face and body and was immediately taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for emergency treatment. She now faces a long, painful journey to recovery, including multiple surgeries, extensive skin grafts, and ongoing physical and emotional rehabilitation.

What was supposed to be a night of celebration quickly turned into a tragic and life-changing ordeal. To help with the overwhelming medical costs, her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to rally support during this challenging time.

Burn Injury Claims: Legal Options After a Catastrophic Incident

Victims of severe burn injuries—especially from preventable incidents—may have the right to file a burn injury claim under personal injury law. In cases like Digan’s, where dangerous substances were used irresponsibly, several legal options may be available.

  • Negligence: Establishing liability for those who mishandled flammable materials.
  • Premises Liability: Holding the property owner or organizers accountable for unsafe conditions.
  • Product Liability: Investigating the manufacturer’s role, especially if safety warnings were removed.

A skilled personal injury lawyer can help victims navigate medical costs, lost educational or career opportunities, and emotional trauma through legal action.
