San Francisco, California — Thirty-nine young Fil-Ams, aged 5 to 14, visited the Philippine Center on June 20, 2025, as part of the Galing Bata ISLA Summer Camp organized by the Filipino Education Center (FEC). The immersive program aimed to strengthen their cultural identity and deepen their appreciation of Filipino heritage.
Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer welcomed the campers, highlighting the importance of instilling cultural pride and understanding among the younger Filipino-Americans. He praised the camp’s role in shaping both the minds and hearts of young Fil-Ams through meaningful learning experiences.
The Consulate General, in partnership with the Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT) and the Philippine Trade and Investment Center–Silicon Valley (PTIC-SV), facilitated several activity stations centered around the theme “Isla ng Kagandahan – Discovering the Beauty of the Philippine Islands.”
Camp highlights included:
- Sentro Rizal: Trivia games, a La Jota Moncadeña dance demo, castanets, and a DFA video.
- Tourism Station: “LOVE the Philippines” coloring activity focused on cultural and natural landmarks.
- Games Station: Traditional games like Tumbang Preso, Sungka, and Limbo Rock promoted camaraderie.
- Sari-sari Store Station: Palabunutan prizes, Filipino snacks, and flavored iced candies for an authentic experience.
Deputy Consul General Maria Paz Cortes led a feedback session and concluded the day with a “pabitin” game, marking a joyful end to the cultural adventure.
