Filipino American Man Killed in Daly City After Gym Dispute

Daly City, California — A 60-year-old Filipino American man was fatally shot following a dispute over gym rules in what officials are calling an “execution murder.” The victim, Rolando Yanga, was a custodian at a Fitness 19 gym in Daly City.

According to authorities, 21-year-old gym member Maarij Afridi allegedly confronted Yanga about enforcing gym policies. Following the argument, Afridi, accompanied by his mother, 50-year-old Zaib Un Nisa Afridi, reportedly followed Yanga home on Sunday evening.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe stated that Yanga had admonished Afridi for breaking gym rules, such as walking barefoot and failing to clean up properly. The confrontation escalated when Afridi later shot Yanga multiple times outside his home with a 10mm handgun.

Describing the incident as an “execution murder,” Wagstaffe said Afridi fired several rounds at Yanga, even after he was down. Both Afridi and his mother have been arrested, with Afridi facing murder charges and his mother charged as an accessory.

Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo condemned the senseless violence and praised local authorities for their swift arrest of the suspects.

Yanga’s family expressed their devastation over the loss of a beloved father and grandfather. Our hearts go out to them during this unimaginable tragedy.
