Filipino American Grad Student Targeted in Anti-Asian Attack

San Diego, California — Christian Pelayo, a Filipino American graduate student at the University of California San Diego, reported being assaulted with frozen eggs in what has been identified as an anti-Asian attack

The incident occurred last week near the Mesa College campus while Pelayo was walking a friend’s dog.

Pelayo, 27, described the attack, stating that he was struck on the side of his head by a frozen egg, causing him to suffer bruises and dislodge his glasses and earrings.

He reported hearing racial slurs from the perpetrators, who then fled the scene in a black sedan. Additional frozen eggs hit Pelayo as he ducked for cover.

Pelayo expressed concern over the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, noting that such incidents make him uneasy about his safety and that of others, including his younger sister.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) San Diego condemned the attack, urging authorities to investigate and hold the offenders accountable thoroughly. CAIR-San Diego Executive Director Tazheen Nizam reaffirmed support for the AAPI community amidst rising incidents of bigotry.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for the Fil-Am community to stay vigilant and report any hate crimes. Anyone with information about the attack is encouraged to contact the San Diego Community College District Police.
